The suspense rises this Sunday at the same time as the abstention rate which promises to be higher than in 2017: after months of an atypical campaign, the score looks uncertain in the first round of the presidential election, with Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen given the lead by the polls, and Jean-Luc MĂ©lenchon in ambush.

Abstention in the first round of the presidential election on Sunday should be between 24% and 26.5%?

according to the first estimates of polling institutes, a higher level than in 2017 (22.23%), but without reaching the 2002 record of 28.4%.

Ifop (for TF1/LCI/ParisMatch/SudRadio) predicts an abstention of 24%, against 25.6% for Harris interactive (M6/RTL) and 26.5% for Ipsos Sopra-Steria (FranceTv/RadioFrance/

LeParisien

/ LCP/RFI), as well as for Elabe (BFMTV/RMC/

L'Express

/SFR) and OpinionWay for CNews/Europe1.

At 5 p.m., turnout stood at 65%, or 4.4 points less than in 2017 (69.42%) and 5.5 than in 2012 (70.59), according to ministry figures inside.

It is however much higher than that of 2002 (58.45%), a record year for abstention in the first round of the presidential election.
