• Emmanuel Macron and Marine le Pen are in the second round of the 2022 presidential election.

  • In Lille, a socialist stronghold led by Martine Aubry, the PS candidate, Anne Hidalgo, did no better than at the national level, around 2%.

  • In the capital of Flanders, it is Jean-Luc Mélenchon (LFI), who is largely doing well.

Melenchon president.

On the evening of this first round of the 2022 presidential election, the results did not lie with the latest polls giving Emmanuel Macron in the lead, closely followed by the candidate of the National Rally (RN), Marine Le Pen.

On the other hand, in Lille, in the North, we do nothing like the others.

In the polling stations of this socialist stronghold, it was Jean-Luc Mélenchon who came out on top, far ahead of the others and even more than the one who wore the colors of the PS, Anne Hidalgo.

In the two offices installed in the heart of the town hall of Lille, the voters did the job.

Neither more nor less than the national trend, with a participation rate above 72%.

At the time of the counting, there was therefore a bit of work, around 1,500 ballots.

Except that as the envelopes were opened, the piles did not all take on the same thickness.

On the tables, some names took a long time to appear, others simply remained absent, like that of Nathalie Arthaud, the candidate of Lutte Ouvrière.

Not better, or almost for the socialist Anne Hidalgo despite the unwavering support she had received from the mayor of Lille, Martine Aubry.

“I warmly greet Anne Hidalgo”

In this socialist city, no one believed in it.

Optimism has its limits and the latest polls did not help galvanize the crowds.

And when the Lille results fell, giving Anne Hidalgo around 2%, no one fell from their chair.

Besides, Martine Aubry did not speak this Sunday evening, leaving the proclamation of the results to her assistant in charge of the elections.

The mayor of Lille, however, split with a simple tweet: “I warmly greet Anne Hidalgo, she who has always been faithful to the values of the left.

[…] In the 2nd round, I will use the Macron bulletin to defeat the far right”.

No, the Lille champion is elsewhere, on the side of La France insoumise (LFI), embodied by Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

This exceeds 40%, ahead of Emmanuel Macron around 30%.

“In Lille, it's not so surprising.

LFI is well anchored in the sector, with deputies like Hugo Bernalicis and Adrien Quattenens”, analyzes a young sympathizer of the outgoing president.

“There was a real momentum to vote Mélenchon.

Even around me, people who did not even want to vote have heard the argument of the useful vote.

I think the message got through,” says Georges, a voter of Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

If Emmanuel Macron has to settle for second place in Lille, must that mean that the heart of the city has remained on the left?

"For the PS and its candidate, it's a total disavowal, because Mélenchon's score shows that Lille still have leftist values," said Dominique, who voted green.

Consult the results of the 1st round

However, however high the score of LFI in Lille, the party will not go to the 2nd round of the presidential election.

Whatever, the objective is elsewhere now.

“These figures bode well for the legislative elections.

The group has a good opportunity to strengthen itself further in the National Assembly, even if we are aware that under the Fifth Republic, this is not of much use, ”recognizes the melanchonist militant.
