From our correspondent in Washington,
Guillaume Naudin
“
It's a day of celebration for KBJ
”.
Ketanji Brown Jackson is not yet in office she is already known by her initials.
Like before her RBG, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who passed away in 2020 and became an icon.
Ketanji Brown Jackson will be the first black woman to serve on the Supreme Court.
It's historic.
A “
tremendous example
”
And that pleases Danielle, a 40-year-old African-American and herself a lawyer specializing in civil and trade union rights: “
I too was told that I could not take high-level courses.
And that's an experience that many black girls have: being ignored, left out, questioned.
But she persevered and is a great example for all of us.
»
A few meters further, still in front of the Supreme Court, Mo Nicole, also a lawyer, also African-American and also in her forties, came accompanied by her daughter Chelsea, to share this example.
“
It's an example for my daughter, to be here and see what's possible for her.
She wears a court robe.
I don't know if she wants to be a lawyer, but I just want to know that if she wants to, she can.
It's good to know that it's possible
,” she says.
Raise an unheard voice
All the participants know well that the appointment of Ketanji Brown Jackson will not change the balance of the court, which is very favorable to the conservatives.
But they all hope it will raise a voice hitherto ignored for more than 230 years.
