Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said, in an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera, that if the Ukrainian forces could not repel the attack in the eastern Donbass region, it is possible that the Russian forces would return to attack the capital Kyiv again.

Zelensky stressed that the Russians failed to enter the capital and control the rest of Ukraine, "thanks to the will of the Ukrainians," as he put it.

"If the Russians were able to control all of our lands, they would have done so, but they failed," he said, but he stressed that the war was not over yet, and said that many regions of Ukraine were occupied by Russia.

Zelensky saw that negotiations are the only way to stop the bloodshed in Ukraine, but he said that it is proceeding slowly, and that he does not see any result from it yet.

During the interview, the Ukrainian president expressed his remorse for his country's abandonment of its nuclear arsenal, saying that this weakened Ukraine, but stressed that it was not seeking to obtain a nuclear weapon.
