The number of reports to the county administrative board regarding deficiencies in animal welfare has increased, according to new statistics from the county administrative board in Västmanland, which SVT Nyheter has read.

- It is very difficult to say exactly why they have increased.

One guess we have is that it may be due to the pandemic and that more people are working from home.

We base this on the fact that we can also see certain increases in connection with holiday times, as people are often more at home and have an easier time seeing if someone is mistreating their animal than if they go to work daily, says Alexandra Röjder.

The normal inspections or routine inspections that the county administrative board carries out take place at food producers or persons who run a business that requires a permit.

That is, at, for example, slaughterhouses, riding schools or zoo shops.

The other controls are about control after complaints, so-called notification cases.

- It can be the police, veterinarians or the general public who are concerned about animals not being cared for properly and then we at the county administrative board can check that the animal keeper complies with the legislation, says Alexandra Röjder.

Since 2018, the county administrative board has been in charge of certain tasks for which the police were previously responsible.

This means, among other things, that a practical implementation and care of animals that are harmed.
