China News Agency, Beijing, April 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a telephone conversation with Canadian Foreign Minister Ms. Jolly on the 5th.

Wang Yi said that the people of China and Canada have had long-term friendly exchanges, and Canada was one of the first Western countries to establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China.

But in recent years, China-Canada relations have suffered serious setbacks due to the Meng Wanzhou incident, which we do not want to see.

The essence of this incident is that the United States used coercion to suppress China's high-tech companies. This behavior is disgusting, and the world can see it clearly.

No country should play tricks and encourage such unilateral bullying, and any country has the right to make necessary responses to it.

Wang Yi said that China has always viewed and handled China-Canada relations from a strategic and long-term perspective.

The status quo of bilateral relations is not in the interests of both sides. The Canadian side should face up to the problem and meet the Chinese side halfway.

Wang Yi made three comments on this:

The first is to look at China positively and objectively, and pursue a prudent and pragmatic China policy.

China's political system and development path are the choices made by the Chinese people and have an inevitable historical logic, which is in line with China's national conditions and the needs of the people.

China's development and progress are not only the legitimate rights of its 1.4 billion people, but also an important part of the modernization of all mankind.

There is no historical entanglement between China and Canada, and there is no real conflict of interest. It is hoped that the Canadian side will do more practical things that are conducive to enhancing mutual trust and promoting bilateral relations with the goal of mutual benefit and win-win results.

The second is to respect each other's core interests and not set new obstacles to China-Canada relations.

The one-China principle is the political foundation of China-Canada relations.

If the Taiwan issue is not handled properly, China-Canada relations will suffer fundamental damage.

It is hoped that the Canadian side will adopt a correct attitude and position on issues concerning China's core interests.

The third is to adhere to independence and eliminate unnecessary external interference.

The leaders of the older generation of China and Canada broke through the resistance and made the decision to establish diplomatic relations.

There are many good stories and traditions in China-Canada exchanges, which are worth cherishing and carrying forward.

It is hoped that the Canadian side will work with the Chinese side to eliminate external interference, overcome difficulties, and achieve healthy, stable and sustainable development of bilateral relations.

Jolly said that Canada is one of the first countries to recognize the People's Republic of China, and Canada-China relations have a solid foundation.

The Canadian side respects China's sovereignty, system and the choices made independently by the Chinese people, and speaks positively of China's great achievements in development, especially poverty alleviation.

This period of Canada-China relations is at a difficult stage. The Canadian side is willing to treat the Chinese side with candor and mutual respect, and in a forward-looking spirit, to gradually bring the Canada-China relationship back to the right track and build a more resilient bilateral relationship.

The Canadian side appreciates China's important contribution to the global fight against the epidemic, and is willing to strengthen cooperation with China on climate change, environmental protection and anti-epidemic.

The two sides also exchanged views on the Ukraine issue.

Wang Yi said that President Xi Jinping has made a comprehensive and authoritative statement on China's position.

China calls on all parties to think calmly and rationally, create opportunities for peace and open up prospects for negotiations.

The current negotiation faces twists and turns and difficulties, but as long as the negotiation goes on, there will be the possibility of a ceasefire and the hope of peace.

China will continue to play a constructive role in this regard based on an objective and fair position.

Jolly said that the Canadian side is willing to maintain communication with the Chinese side.
