• Anti-Corruption Courts accuse Luis Medina and another businessman of using a cousin of Almeida to earn six million selling masks

  • Alleged corruption 12 luxury cars, a yacht and a vacation in Marbella: This is how the commissioners of the masks in Madrid spent public money

The head of the Court of Instruction Number 47 of Madrid has admitted for processing this Thursday the complaint filed by the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office against businessmen

Luis Medina and Alberto Luceño

, accused of

"obtaining an exaggerated and unjustified economic benefit"

for the purchase of sanitary material - masks, gloves and tests- that they would later distribute to the

Madrid City Council

at the beginning of the pandemic when these products were scarce in all public administrations.

According to legal sources, the instructor is already investigating whether both businessmen committed

crimes of fraud, false documents and money laundering

.

In addition, the judge will summon Medina and Luceño to testify in the coming days, legal sources report.

On the other hand, the Madrid magistrate has given the Madrid City Council the opportunity to appear in criminal proceedings as the direct victim of the alleged fraud.

In its complaint, the Public Ministry explains that “a high percentage of the price offered” for the health products “corresponded to commissions that the defendants were going to receive” through the sale, estimated at up to

six million euros

.

Specifically, 60% in the case of masks;

81%, in the gloves, and almost 71%, in the tests.

In fact, the price of the masks was "artificially" inflated according to Anti-Corruption to 148% above the real price of the product.

In the account of the facts investigated by the prosecutor, it is stated that Medina used

"his friendship with a relative of the mayor of Madrid"

, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, to carry out the allegedly criminal operation.

Specifically, it would be a lawyer cousin of the first mayor, Carlos Martínez-Almeida, whom the Prosecutor's Office does not identify by name and surname in his complaint.

Yesterday, the municipal councilor maintained that “my relative did not know Luis Medina, a mutual friend contacted him.

He gives her an email and indicates that this is the official channel to do these things.

In addition, Almeida announced in his appearance that

the City Council would appear in the case as affected

in the investigation regarding the sale of one million masks, 2.5 million gloves and 250,000 rapid self-diagnosis tests.
