The city of Frankfurt has approved the controversial demonstration that pro-Russian groups have called for this Sunday in the city center - but under strict conditions.

As the regulatory office announced on Thursday, the registered 2000 participants are not allowed to drive through the city in a motorcade.

Rather, they are encouraged to walk the route.

The route from Opernplatz to the main cemetery via Reuterweg, Fürstenberger Straße, Eschersheimer Landstraße, Holzhausenstraße, Oeder Weg and Rat-Beil-Straße was specified by conditional order.

In addition, certain symbols and insignia related to the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine may not be displayed.

This applies in particular to the characters "V" and "Z" as well as to the "St. George ribbon".

"Any actions that incite hatred and discord" are also prohibited.

Against mockery of victims in Ukraine

The suffering of the people in Ukraine should not be downplayed and Russia's actions should not be glorified.

The regulatory office made it "unmistakably clear to the applicant for the meeting in the cooperation meeting that violations of the requirements will have consequences," it said in a statement.

The police announced on Thursday that they would accompany the rally with a large contingent.

Frankfurt's head of security, Annette Rinn (FDP), said it must be avoided that "obvious advertising for the heinous acts and thus war propaganda is carried out" on Sunday.

However, the legal right to freedom of assembly is an essential element of democratic openness.

It contains the fundamental duty of the state to enable meetings to be held.

The city complies with this, but takes into account the protection against war propaganda and the mockery of victims in Ukraine with extensive conditions.
