  • Spain Holy Week 2022: when is it, calendar, dates and holidays by communities

The

processions

return to the Spanish streets in a long-

awaited Holy Week

and that marks the beginning of the

return to normality

, although the autonomous communities have designed specific plans for the liturgical celebrations that

begin tomorrow, Friday of Sorrows

.

Caution has forced the brotherhoods to propose strategies that cover any type of eventuality in order to

prevent covid-19 from subtracting prominence

from the processional steps, which have not been able to go out into the street for two years, and whose return causes nerves and a special wish that everything goes perfectly.

In addition to the

echoes of drums and bugles

, the traditional religious images or the Nazarene parade, the mask will also be the protagonist in these eight days, as it will accompany most of the

brothers during their parades

and those who want to enjoy as spectators.

CASTILE AND LEON

The health authorities have also forced the

use of masks outdoors

in Castilla y León as long as the safety distance cannot be kept, a measure that affects both the people who attend the scheduled events and the brothers who star in them.

However, as a novelty in

Zamora

, for the first time in 97 years of history, women will participate in

one of its most emblematic processions: that of Silence on Holy Wednesday

, the result of a statutory change approved in 2018 that has finally been made possible cash.

This same Friday of Sorrows, in

Valladolid

, the first procession of Holy Week (Forgiveness and Hope) will be held, which ends at the Monument to the Brotherhood, where an offering will be made in memory of all the deceased brothers, mainly due to the pandemic.

Although it is true that there is a great desire to go out after

two years of absence

, not all the brothers dare to take risks.

The fear of the coronavirus persists, for example, in

Ciudad Rodrigo

(Salamanca), where the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Solitude does not have enough brothers to carry out its most emblematic step.

In

León

, the "papones" will return to the streets in the year in which the 75th anniversary of the Mayor Board is celebrated, with antigen tests for the brothers who so wish.

MURCIA

The first procession in Spain will leave next morning from

Cartagena

.

The way of the cross of Cristo del Socorro will go through the streets of the historic center at first light on Friday, April 8, in a procession that starts at four in the morning.

For the holy weeks recognized as being of International Tourist Interest in the Region of Murcia -

Lorca, Cartagena, Jumilla and Murcia

- the Superior Council of Brotherhoods has made masks mandatory;

the surgical one, if it is processed with the face covered, or FFP2, if it is done with the face uncovered.

ANDALUSIA

The Andalusian brotherhoods are preparing to abide by the recommendations given by the Board, among them, that the costaleros and men and women of the throne take a

self-diagnosis test

for coronavirus prior to the start of the penance season and that during the procession they use masks.

In

Seville

, there are about seventy brotherhoods in procession with more than 70,000 Nazarenes;

Some agree that the use of the mask can be especially difficult for costaleros to comply with during the

penitence season

, given the physical effort involved in carrying the weight of a float of Christ or a Virgin.

Although the General Council of Brotherhoods and Brotherhoods of Seville has reported that each brotherhood will decide whether or not to abide by the

recommendations of the Board

, they advise people who do penance in processions to keep as much distance as possible and wear a mask, at least hygienic. .

In this sense, in

Malaga

the brotherhoods will ask their men or women of the throne to provide some document proving they have undergone a covid test or a self-diagnosis test will be carried out before the procession begins.

In the case of the masks, each Malaga brotherhood will provide them in order to form part of the particular uniformity of each one and, although the

color black prevails,

some will opt for their identifying tone.

CASTILLA LA MANCHA

The main recommendation, in Castilla-La Mancha, is to

continue wearing the mask,

both indoors and outdoors.

Its use is the main suggestion in

Toledo and Cuenca

-whose Holy Weeks have been declared of International Tourist Interest-, both outdoors and inside the temples, but they have also insisted on

avoiding crowds in the churches.

In addition,

Hellín

will resume its drumming, declared an intangible heritage of humanity by UNESCO, which will be held as before the pandemic, except for the use of the mask, also recommended outdoors.

Some

20,000 drummers

will attend this event, although with costaleros and Nazarenos the number of participants can increase by another 2,000 more.

REST OF THE COUNTRY

The most important processions in the city of

Madrid

will take place on Palm Sunday, Good Thursday and Good Friday -with those of Jesús del Gran Poder y la Esperanza, Jesús de Medinaceli or el Silencio, among others- and on Resurrection Sunday, a day in which the famous drumming will take place starting from the Plaza Mayor of the capital.

In the

Valencian Community,

the use of skirts or elements that hinder ventilation within the steps or thrones will be reduced and it is proposed that one person be in charge of controlling that there are no crowds of brothers and spectators.

In

La Rioja

, the Brotherhood of Brotherhoods of the Passion of the City of Logroño has transmitted to the eleven brotherhoods of Logroño the power to establish their rules, provided that what is established by the health authorities and the diocese prevails.

In the Rioja town of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, the residents eagerly await the departure of the "picaos", who will return to the streets this year in the processions on Holy Thursday and Good Friday after having been suspended for the first time, since the beginnings of the rite in the 16th century, due to the pandemic.

In

Ferrol

(Galicia), some 300,000 people are expected to fill the city from Palm Sunday.

The president of the General Board of Brotherhoods, César Carreño, tells Efe that the requests for information about the event are more than before the pandemic and asks for responsibility: "The processions are long, excessive crowds must be avoided," he advises.

In

Palma de Mallorca

, the processions will have unlimited capacity and changes to their usual route so that they are carried out along the widest arteries, apart from the fact that there will be no rental chairs to watch the steps.

Spectators must wear a mask despite the fact that it is an outdoor event, although the brothers will go with their faces uncovered.

Passporters, who will not be able to keep a safe distance, will be asked to be vaccinated, wear masks and have had an antigen test.

In

Zaragoza

, the most massive act will be held again, the procession of the Holy Burial on Good Friday, the longest in Spain and which brings together, as in a great chronological way of the cross of the Passion of Christ, all the brotherhoods of the city.

In the

Basque Country

, the return of the traditional Living Passion of Balmaseda stands out, involving 650 residents of this Biscayan town and attracting thousands of people to witness the Trial of Pilate, the Stations of the Cross and the crucifixion of Jesus.

Finally,

Castro Urdiales

(Cantabria) will once again receive visitors from all over to witness the Living Passion, a celebration whose wait "consumed from the inside" the organizers of this festival of national tourist interest, in which more than 700 actors and extras They represent this way of the cross since 1984.
