Consider the possibility of using traditional Chinese medicine to treat COVID-19 within its health care system and regulatory framework.

The WHO expert assessment meeting on the treatment of new coronary pneumonia with traditional Chinese medicine was held in the form of a video conference from February 28 to March 2.

21 international experts from 6 WHO regional offices conducted discussions on clinical practice, scientific research and evidence-based evaluation, etc., and exchanged and evaluated the reports shared by Chinese experts on the treatment of new coronary pneumonia with traditional Chinese medicine. Expert assessment report.

The report pointed out that the research results show that traditional Chinese medicine can effectively treat the new crown, and according to the clinical efficacy judgment indicators, it is particularly effective for mild and common cases, which is conducive to reducing the risk of mild or common cases turning into severe cases.

For mild and common cases, traditional Chinese medicine, when used as an additional intervention, can shorten virus clearance time, clinical symptom relief time, and hospitalization time compared with conventional treatment alone.

In addition to conventional treatment, the use of traditional Chinese medicine for intervention is not only well tolerated, but also similar in safety to simple conventional treatment; early use of traditional Chinese medicine can improve the clinical prognosis of patients with mild and common new coronary pneumonia.

The report recommends that, considering the evolving nature of the global COVID-19 outbreak, WHO should share the results of this assessment with Member States in a timely manner.

Member States are encouraged to consider the possibility of using TCM to treat COVID-19 within their health care systems and regulatory frameworks; sharing of experiences and lessons is encouraged, especially positive experiences gained through organized TCM research programmes and clinical experiences from China.

The report applauds the huge investment and efforts made by the Chinese government and researchers to improve knowledge and develop treatments for the novel coronavirus since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, and believes that it is necessary to further conduct research on the treatment of novel coronavirus pneumonia with traditional Chinese medicine.

The progress made so far has also laid a solid foundation for international collaboration and cooperation, which will lead to more effective and appropriate use of traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of COVID-19, which will benefit the health of all human beings, the report said.
