A judicial inquiry was opened after two young children almost drowned in Champagne-sur-Seine (Seine-et-Marne) on March 25.

The mother of the two girls was indicted on Monday for "attempted homicide by ascendant of a minor under fifteen".

The baby had remained in the waters of the Seine for about twenty minutes before being rescued by firefighters.

Her 2-year-old sister had been saved from drowning by two teenagers.

They had intervened after seeing the 20-year-old mother fall into the river with her two children.

The eldest of the two girls was taken in charge by Childhood Social Assistance (Ase).

Placed in police custody for forty-eight hours and then re-examined last week, the young mother had mentioned an accident.

This thesis, however, did not convince the investigators.
