"I look forward to this new collaboration. Just over a year and a half ago, I certainly did not leave the Dutch national team out of dissatisfaction," he said, quoted in a statement. of the KNVB.

Koeman previously served as manager from 2018 to 2020.

His new contract with the KNVB will run until the 2026 World Cup and has been signed by both parties, the federation said.

"We are very happy that Ronald is coming back next year. During his previous +mandate+ as national coach, his work and his results had been very satisfactory", underlined Marianne van Leeuwen, director of professional football at the KNVB. .

Koeman will thus succeed Louis van Gaal, appointed head of the "Oranje" in August to lead the selection until the World Cup in Qatar, which will take place from November 21 to December 18.

Van Gaal announced last week that he has been suffering from prostate cancer since 2020. He nevertheless assured that the disease will not prevent him from traveling to Qatar.

After his career as a footballer, Koeman was notably manager of Ajax, Benfica, PSV, Valencia, AZ, Feyenoord, Southampton, Everton and Barcelona.

The Dutchman was also national coach from February 2018 to mid-2020, during which time the national team finished second in the Nations League and qualified for the European Championship, the KNVB recalled.

Koeman was sacked in October from FC Barcelona, just after a stinging defeat in the La Liga clasico against Real Madrid, after 14 chaotic months at the helm of the team.
