China News Service, April 6 (Xinhua) According to Canada's "Sing Tao Daily" report, as Canada's federal Liberal Party is about to release its latest budget, the government relaxes rules for hiring temporary foreign workers in certain industries with severe labor shortages.

Employers will be able to hire foreign workers for more low-wage jobs, also in areas where unemployment remains high, under the policy changes announced Monday.

High-wage, highly-skilled workers will also be able to qualify for employment for three years instead of two, making it easier to obtain permanent residency.

Federal Employment Minister Quartero said the policy changes provided short-term temporary relief for companies struggling to fill vacancies, including some with dwindling numbers of available workers.

She also noted that the federal government has been working to improve the foreign worker program without putting downward pressure on wages, and the policy changes announced Monday are part of those efforts.

While Quartro didn't say what specifics might appear in the budget, she expects the budget to address future labor market needs and current issues, including Canada's record number of job openings.
