A cleric was killed and two injured in a stabbing incident inside the most famous shrine in Iran.. Video

An attacker stabbed 3 clerics on Tuesday at the Imam Reza shrine, the most revered Shiite site in Iran, according to Iranian state media.

The attack resulted in the death of one person and the injury of two others before the attacker was arrested.

The motive for the attack remains unclear.

One of the victims died instantly after being stabbed at the Imam Reza shrine, a popular site for Shiite pilgrims, in the northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad.

The other two were taken to a hospital, according to the official IRNA news agency.

The media identified the dead cleric as Muhammad Aslani.

It did not provide information about the condition of the other injured or identify the suspect.

In a video clip from the site of the attack circulated on social media, two men are seen on the gray marble floor of the shrine, covered in blood.

Erna posted a video of the police arresting the attacker.

The attack occurred on the third day of Ramadan, when Muslim worshipers flock to mosques across the country.

The shrine of Imam Reza in Mashhad, 900 km northeast of the capital, Tehran, is the largest and most visited complex in Iran. The shrine attracts about 20 million people annually, most of whom are Iranians and visitors to neighboring countries such as Iraq and Pakistan.

Such violent attacks at the shrine are rare, but one of the largest terrorist attacks in Iranian history took place at the shrine in 1994. At the time, the government accused the armed opposition People's Mojahedin group of being behind the bombing that killed about 24 people.
