Wang Yi Holds Telephone Talks with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kuleba

On April 4, 2022, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a telephone conversation with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kuleba at request.

The two sides exchanged views on the situation in Ukraine.

Kuleba introduced the situation in Russia and Ukraine, saying that China is a great country that advocates and practices the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and is a key positive force in maintaining peace.

Uruguay attaches great importance to China's international influence and prestige, and is willing to maintain communication with China. It is hoped that China will continue to play an important role in ceasefire and war.

Wang Yi first thanked the Uzbek government and all walks of life for their efforts in assisting the safe evacuation of Chinese citizens in Uzbekistan, stressing that Chinese leaders and the Chinese government attach great importance to the safety of every overseas citizen, and hoped that the Uzbek side would continue to take active and effective measures to ensure the voluntary stay in Uzbekistan. A small number of Chinese citizens are safe.

Kuleba said that the Ukrainian side will make its best efforts to this end.

Wang Yi said that China's basic attitude on the Ukraine issue is to persuade peace and promote talks.

President Xi Jinping has comprehensively expounded China's position and proposition on many occasions, which is an important guideline for us to deal with the current challenges.

Maintaining peace and opposing war is China's historical and cultural tradition and our consistent foreign policy.

On the Ukraine issue, China does not seek geopolitical self-interest, does not have the mentality of watching the fire from the other side, and will not do things that add fuel to the fire.

There is only one goal we sincerely look forward to, and that is peace.

The Chinese side welcomes the Russia-Ukraine peace talks. No matter how difficult or disagreement there are, we must adhere to the general direction of peace talks until a ceasefire and peace are negotiated.

Wang Yi said that wars will always end, and the key is how to overcome the pain and maintain the lasting security of Europe.

The Chinese side believes that a balanced, effective and sustainable European security mechanism should be truly established through equal dialogue based on the principle of indivisibility of security.

China is willing to uphold an objective and fair position and continue to play a constructive role in this regard in its own way.

It is believed that the Uzbek side has enough wisdom to independently make choices that conform to the fundamental interests of its own people.

Kuleba agreed with China's views and thanked China for its humanitarian assistance to Ukraine. He said that Ukraine is still committed to conducting peace talks with Russia and finding a lasting solution. Ukraine is willing to become the door of Europe.

Wang Yi said, I hope this door can lead to peace in Europe, the development of Ukraine, and the cooperation between China and Europe.
