Technology and communications companies generally did well on the first day of trading week, pushing up the three leading indices on Wall Street.

The relative weight of technology shares meant that the index rose, despite the fact that the majority of the stock exchange's shares declined.

Among the winners were IT giants such as Apple and Microsoft, which rose 2.4 and 1.8 percent respectively.

The broad S&P 500 index rose 0.8 percent, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.3 percent and the technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index rose 1.9 percent.
