Europe 1 Studio SEASON 2021 - 202207:00 a.m., April 04, 2022

Hear the story of the conquest of Peru by Francisco Pizarro, a 16th-century Spanish explorer.

In January 1531, the conquistador Francisco Pizarro landed on the shores of Peru with 200 men, ready to make history.

He is the cousin of Hernan Cortès, the explorer behind the discovery of Mexico.

Emperor Charles V entrusted Pizarro with the mission of taking possession of this new land in his name.

Of course, this land at the end of the world is inhabited by the great people of the Incas but the rumor says it is also full of riches.

And like all the conquistadors in the 16th century, Pizarro dreams of glory, that of having colonized a territory of the New World which no Spaniard had approached until then... In this new episode of the podcast “At the heart of the History” produced by Europe 1 Studio,

Clémentine Portier-Kaltenbach recounts the first steps of the conquistador Francisco Pizarro in Peru, a land that was then part of the Inca Empire.

Despite the failure of previous expeditions, Francisco Pizarro is confident, because this time he has the support of the king.

Coming from a poor family, Francisco Pizarro is almost illiterate.

But in the New World, his humble origins don't matter in the slightest.

He was a man of strong character, courageous and determined to accomplish his civilizing mission in what is now South America.

In the eyes of Westerners of the time, Christians and "civilized", it is urgent to convert the Inca people, to the habits and customs close to Pizarro and his men of animality.

History describes them as living half-naked,

wearing her hair long and covered in gold from head to toe… But where does all this gold come from?

What treasure do the Incas hide on their land?

Clémentine Portier-Kaltenbach immerses us in this first part of the episode of the Europe 1 Studio podcast “At the heart of History” in the story of the colonization of Peru by the Spanish explorer Francisco Pizarro.
