A 50-year-old gendarme was found dead in his barracks this Thursday in Gien (Loiret).

It was his colleagues who made the macabre discovery around 4:30 p.m. in his office, reports France 3 Center-Val-de-Loire.

An investigation has been opened to determine the cause of death.

"A gunshot wound was noted in his head and his service weapon was found at his feet," prosecutor Loïc Abrial said in a statement relayed by our colleagues.

According to the first elements, the non-commissioned officer would have ended his life.

This thesis of suicide will be confirmed or not by additional forensic examinations.
