6 dead and 9 injured in California shooting, state governor: "This massacre must end!"

At least six people were killed and nine others were injured in a shooting in Sacramento, California, early Sunday morning, police said.

"Police have identified at least 15 shooting victims, including six who died," Sacramento police said in a statement on Twitter.

Police had earlier called on people to avoid the area.

The American newspaper, "Los Angeles Times" quoted the authorities as saying that the shooting took place around two in the morning in a popular entertainment area crowded with people, and that the motive behind the shooting is still unknown.

"Everything I heard about last night, it didn't have to be that bad, and it didn't have to happen at all if we had the right laws," said Sacramento City Councilor Katie Valenzuela.

Sacramento Mayor Daryl Steinberg asked: "What sane society would allow offensive weapons to proliferate the way we see them used indiscriminately, not just in Sacramento, but in other parts of the country?"

California's Moms Demand Action said in a statement it was "sick and tired of waking up to news of a senseless act of gun violence."

"The scourge of gun violence continues to be a crisis in our country, and we must resolve to end this massacre," California Governor Gavin Newsom said in a statement after yesterday's shooting.

The police in Sacramento, California, USA, revealed that more than one person participated in the shooting that occurred in the early hours of the morning, killing six people and wounding 12 others, but the suspects are still at large.

Police chief Cathy Lister did not provide information on any suspects or the motive behind the shooting, which took place a few blocks from the state Capitol.

"We know there was a big fight right before the shooting, and we've confirmed that there were a number of shooters," Lister said at an afternoon news conference.

Lister said the dead included three men and three women.

It added that the shooting took place at about 2 a.m. Pacific time (0900 GMT) near the Golden 1 Center, where the Sacramento Kings basketball team plays its games and where concerts are held.
