The Ukrainian military says it has regained control of 29 military posts in Kyiv and the Chernihiv region, reports The Guardian.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyj says in a speech that Russian troops are "slowly but noticeably" moving from the northern parts of the country.

The British Ministry of Defense states that Russian forces appear to have withdrawn from the airport in Hostomel, northwest of the capital Kyiv.

At the same time, Zelensky urges the Ukrainian population to exercise caution as there may be large quantities of mines left in these areas and there is still a risk of shelling.

Russian attacks

Zelensky also warned in his speech that the situation in eastern Ukraine remains extremely difficult and that fierce fighting in the Donbas and Kharkiv awaits.

On Saturday morning, there will be reports that Russian forces have carried out rocket attacks on Poltava and Kremenchuk in central Ukraine.

Among other things, residential buildings and infrastructure must have been hit by the shelling, reports Reuters.

Zelensky also mentioned the humanitarian situation in the besieged city of Mariupol in his speech, saying that about 3,000 people had managed to be evacuated from the city.

On Friday evening, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) stated that an evacuation from the city had not been possible, but that 2,000 people had managed to leave the city on their own.

It is unclear whether they are among the people Zelensky is talking about.

According to local authorities, at least 5,000 people have been killed in Mariupol.

An estimated 170,000 people remain in the city.

They have no or inadequate access to water, food and electricity.
