According to press reports in Brazil, geologists at the University of Sao Paulo have discovered in the Amazon rainforest an extinct volcano dating back 1900 million years, making it the oldest known volcano on Earth.

Scientists discovered the volcano when they were conducting research in northern Brazil for minerals - especially gold - in the deep layers of soil in this region.

The volcano is located in the middle of the forest and its current height ranges between 200 and 250 meters. Scientists also believe that its height at the beginning was more than 400 meters and then declined due to erosion and erosion factors.

One of the coordinators of the scientific team, Professor Caetano Giuliani, explained that "it is rare to find such volcanoes that have not lost much of their structure, as volcanoes usually disappear after a few million years."

He added that most of the old volcanoes date back to about 60 million years, while the oldest ones are no more than 500 million years old.
