Traveling to Fouras, in Charente-Maritime, Emmanuel Macron made an unnoticed confidence to residents on the subject of euthanasia.

The president-candidate explained that he was "in favor of moving towards the Belgian model", which means the decriminalization of euthanasia.

It is a rather unexpected confession by Emmanuel Macron which was picked up by the microphones of Europe 1. In Fouras, in Charente-Maritime, the president-candidate for the presidential election discussed with French people who questioned him on the subject of euthanasia.

"I am giving you a personal opinion because I think that there needs to be a debate in society on such a subject. I am in favor of moving towards the Belgian model", said Emmanuel Macron.

This model signifies a decriminalization of euthanasia.

Seeking consensus in society

Although the outgoing president had not made a commitment on this issue, referring to the vote on the Claeys-Leonetti law, he explained that "the subject had been put on the table with the members of the National Ethics Committee" at the moment of the bioethics law.

"We wondered", details the head of state, "I had no democratic mandate to do that and there is no consensus in society", recognizes the candidate for his re-election.

In front of a woman who talks to him about his 40-year-old friend, Emmanuel Macron adds that he has made a commitment to change the subject "by making a citizens' convention so that it gives birth to a consensus".

If he dismisses the Swiss model, the Belgian model "is different and it makes it possible to treat cases like that of your friend, which are known degenerative diseases where we know that there is a fatal outcome", argued the president-candidate.
