China News Agency, Washington, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Minister Counselor Zhu Haiquan, head of the Bilateral Office of the Chinese Embassy in the United States, recently sent a letter to the editorial board of The Washington Post on the Taiwan-related remarks, pointing out that the so-called "threat" by mainland China to Taiwan simply does not make sense. .

The Taiwan issue is not a question of "democracy versus authoritarianism", but a struggle against secession and anti-separatism.

On March 24, the Washington Post published an article by Xiao Meiqin, "Ukraine's Revelation to Taiwan: We Must Fight Authoritarianism", using the situation in Ukraine to throw out a series of fallacies that attempt to change the fact that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one China.

The Chinese embassy in the United States sent a letter to the editorial board of the newspaper for a solemn response.

The letter pointed out that the Taiwan issue is fundamentally different from the Ukraine issue: Ukraine is a sovereign state, and the Ukrainian issue is a conflict between sovereign states; Taiwan is a part of China, and the Taiwan issue is purely China's internal affairs.

The letter emphasizes that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory in the past, present and future, not an independent and sovereign state.

The Cairo Declaration issued in 1943 explicitly returned Taiwan to China.

In 1945, the Potsdam Proclamation reaffirmed that the conditions of the Cairo Declaration would be implemented.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China and becoming the sole legitimate government of China, Taiwan was indisputably part of the new China.

United Nations Resolution 2758 further clarified Taiwan's status.

This is something no one can deny.

During a video call with President Xi Jinping on March 18, President Biden reiterated that the United States adheres to the one-China policy and does not support "Taiwan independence".

The letter pointed out that the so-called "threat" of Taiwan by the Chinese mainland makes no sense at all.

The compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are all Chinese, and have a kinship with blood thicker than water.

At present, millions of Taiwan compatriots live and work in peace and contentment on the mainland. Why do family members threaten each other?

As Taiwan's largest export market and largest source of trade surplus, the mainland can only bring tangible benefits and well-being to Taiwan compatriots. How could it be a threat?

The letter stated that the Taiwan issue is not a question of "democracy against authoritarianism", but a struggle for division and anti-separatism.

Using "democracy" and "authoritarianism" to separate the two sides of the Taiwan Strait is to provoke confrontation and find excuses for "Taiwan independence". This is the real threat to the people of Taiwan!

The future of Taiwan lies in the peaceful development of cross-strait relations and the ultimate realization of the reunification of the motherland. The Chinese on both sides of the strait should work together to seek national reunification.
