South Africa has just crossed a sadly symbolic threshold.

The country has recorded a total of more than 100,000 deaths from Covid-19, according to official figures released on Wednesday.

Above all, according to scientists, the real number of deaths is certainly higher.

Data from the National Institute of Communicable Diseases shows that a total of 100,020 deaths have been recorded since the start of the pandemic two years ago.

But researchers estimate that the actual number of pandemic victims could be three times higher than these official figures.

Data from the South African Medical Research Council shows that more than 300,000 additional natural deaths have occurred since the start of the pandemic.

The most affected country on the African continent

"Since May 3, 2020, there have been a total of 303,400 additional deaths from natural causes in people of all ages," the council said in a report released Tuesday.

“A significant proportion of the current excess mortality observed in South Africa is likely attributable to Covid-19,” the report read.

South Africa is the hardest hit country on the African continent, with more than 3.7 million people infected with the coronavirus.
