• In Rennes, a city rather connected to culture and music, humor took a long time to break through.

  • After the cafe-theatre Le Bacchus, established since 1995, a new theater dedicated to humor opens its doors this Thursday in the Breton capital.

  • Installed in the Longs Champs commercial area, La Comédie de Rennes will offer comedies, stand-up and shows for young audiences.

By browsing the cultural agenda in Rennes, the public will easily find a concert or an exhibition to eat, so abundant is the cultural offer in the Breton capital.

To pay for a slice of laughter, on the other hand, is much more complicated.

Apart from the passage of a few stars at Liberté, comedy shows are indeed not legion.

Only Le Bacchus offers year-round one-man or one-woman shows and more occasionally comedies.

Established since 1995 in the city center, first on rue de la Chalotais then on the islet of l'Octroi since the end of 2019, the café-théâtre has nevertheless taken a long time to find a place in the Rennes landscape.

"More than ten years at least," says Marie Marcouyau, co-manager of the premises.

Now recognized on the national scene, the Bacchus, which has seen big names in humor like Florence Foresti or Fabrice Eboué in their early days, has indeed had a complicated first few years.

"At that time, humor was not yet widely recognized in Rennes, which is a very musical city," she explains.

People even called us crazy because we charged to enter shows”.

A place managed by show producers

But the Bacchus held firm, providing a stage for 25 years, the only one in Rennes, for young comedians.

A virtual monopoly of laughter which will end this Thursday with the opening of a new theater exclusively dedicated to humor.

Called La Comédie de Rennes, this new 140-seat venue is located in the Longs Champs shopping area, northeast of Rennes.

"Given the size and dynamism of the city, we thought there was room for another place," says Yoann Combronde.

The interested party knows the environment well because, with his three partners, he already manages a dozen places in France such as La Comédie de Metz, Grenoble or Tours, La Roseraie in Toulouse or Défonce de rire in Clermont-Ferrand.

The four co-managers also write and produce numerous shows that they run in the various venues of their network, such as

The mechanics of the couple

which will be played until Sunday for the opening of the venues.

“We will be very much in the register of comedy or boulevard theater with shows for a large audience”, underlines Nilson José.

The venue will also be open to young stand-up talent and will give pride of place to young audiences with shows every Wednesday and weekend.
