The offices of the "Independent Commissioner for Questions of Child Sexual Abuse" (UBSKM) are located in the Federal Ministry of Education, but this office is located in the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs.

The homelessness of this office, which was set up in 2010, could soon come to an end, if not in the actual sense, then in a figurative sense: Kerstin Claus, who was appointed by the federal cabinet to succeed Johannes-Wilhelm Rörig on Wednesday, does not have to make her way into the many incorporate the thorny dossiers of their new job.

As a member of the Council for Affected Persons at the UBSKM, she has long been pushing not only for institutions to assume responsibility, but also for greater networking of those affected and their participation in reappraisal, research and political processes.

Claus will soon be able to follow up on her words with deeds.

In addition, their change of sides forces the actors in politics to show their colors.

The fact that the appointment of the expert from the SPD parliamentary group, who lives with the Greens, was wholeheartedly welcomed gives hope: her office and the independent investigation commission are still awaiting a legal basis.

But better child protection should be a concern of the whole of Parliament – as well as of society as a whole.
