The atmosphere is Cold War in Bratislava.
Slovakia has decided to expel 35 Russian diplomats, the Foreign Ministry announced on Wednesday, citing information provided by intelligence services.
This measure is part of a long series of expulsions of Russian diplomats by several member states of the European Union and by the United States, in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
"We regret that after the previous expulsions of Russian diplomats in the past two years, the Russian diplomatic mission has shown no intention to operate properly in Slovakia," said the spokesman for Slovak diplomacy.
Juraj Tomagaa thus alluded to two expulsions each time targeting three Russian diplomats, in August 2020 and March 2022. Two years ago, the Slovak media had estimated the number of Russian diplomats in Bratislava at around 45.
The charge of the Slovak Prime Minister
“My government will not tolerate the Russians carrying out massive espionage activities in Slovakia under diplomatic cover, corrupting our citizens, spreading disinformation and polarizing our society,” Prime Minister Eduard Heger wrote on Facebook. under the title “Dasvidania” (“goodbye” in Russian).
On Tuesday, Belgium, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and Ireland announced the expulsion of dozens of Russian diplomats suspected of spying, in a coordinated action.
