The United States Seismological Service (USGS) announced that a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck eastern New Caledonia on Thursday.

The tremor occurred at 4:44 p.m. local time (5:44 GMT) at a depth of ten kilometers, 279 kilometers southeast of Tadine, New Caledonia.

The US National Weather Service has issued a warning that "dangerous tsunami waves" may arise "on coasts within 300 km of the earthquake's epicenter" in the Pacific.

These waves of less than 0.3 meters above tide level are expected along the coasts of Vanuatu, Fiji and New Caledonia, he said.

“People located in areas (…) at risk should remain attentive to information and follow the instructions of national and local authorities,” warned the meteorological service.
