After a certain relief in January and February - with only a few days left in the month, it can be established: The electricity price has turned up again and the March invoice will be most noticeable for electricity consumers in Götaland and Svealand.

In electricity area 4, southern Götaland, the average price is SEK 1.50 per kilowatt hour (kWh).

It is the second highest price ever so far, and is only beaten by December 2021 when electricity cost SEK 1:87 per kWh, according to the electricity exchange Nordpool's figures.

Even in electricity area 3, Svealand and northern Götaland, the trend is the same.

The average price in March lands at SEK 1:24 / kWh, also the second highest so far, compared with the record month of December of SEK 1:80 and 77 öre in February.

15 times more expensive

In the north, electricity areas 1 and 2, it looks completely different.

In March, electricity there cost 20 öre / kWh, which according to Björn Björnson, electricity analyst at the electricity trading company Godel, is the lowest quotation since December 2020.

Some days during the month, electricity was around 15 times more expensive in the south compared to the north.

The large contrasts are related to cheap hydropower in the north - electricity production which, due to transmission problems, does not reach down to southern Sweden, which in turn is affected by the significantly higher electricity prices on the continent.

This is also the reason why the government has tightened the electricity subsidy for March, which now only applies to southern Sweden - money that most electricity distributors aim to start paying out in April-May.

- It definitely hits more right this time, says Björn Björnson.

Colder again

In recent days, the price drop has been extra large.

On Monday, the electricity cost only 17 öre all the way down to Skåne, to cost almost SEK 1.90 / kWh again the next day.

- The last few days it has been mild and very windy in Sweden, it reduces the connection to the continent, says Björn Björnson.

German solar has also produced a relatively large amount of electricity in recent days, which has mitigated the impact of gas prices.

But to a large extent, the gas price will continue to control electricity prices in southern Sweden, and the weather.

Now it looks like it will be cold for a week or two.

-There are therefore many indications that the April price will be high, says Björn Björnson and notes that futures trading for the second quarter continues to indicate high electricity prices.
