During last year's bird flu, 1.5 million of Sweden's nine million laying hens were killed.

But the egg producers have already almost compensated for the large loss.

From one crisis to another

Now it is instead the very fast and large price increases for feed and fuel that there has not been a chance to even plan for, according to the industry organization Swedish Eggs.

For one kg of eggs, 2.2 kg of feed is needed.

- Right now I pay to produce eggs instead of getting paid, says Helen Eriksson, the egg and laying hen producer at Grimstad farm outside Linköping.

Helen Eriksson also breeds laying hens for sale to egg producers.

- There are egg producers who cancel their new laying hens.

It takes a very long time to get back into production again, as a laying hen lives between 85 and 90 weeks.

"Food chains must raise prices"

- Each egg needs to be 35 öre more expensive and the entire amount needs to end up with the egg producer.

Then we save Sweden's high degree of self-sufficiency in eggs, says Marie Lönneskog Hogstadius, operations manager for the industry organization Swedish Eggs.

Swedish Eggs was this week informed by ICA that they are deviating from their long contract periods and are actually raising the price.
