Even before the corona pandemic, there were staff challenges in Surahammar's elderly care.

In 2019, the cost for hourly employees was almost SEK 4.5 million - SEK 1,265,000 over budget.

During the pandemic, the situation has been strained.

Departments have periodically been understaffed as it has been difficult to find substitutes.

Started substitute pool on trial

In order to facilitate staff recruitment and at the same time maintain continuity in operations, a substitute pool was started at the Källbogården nursing home on trial in November.

The accommodation has about 120 employees and accommodation in nine departments.

In the video above, the union and the area manager talk about the positive experiences and effects of the substitute pool -

which will be permanent from May.

According to the social administration, the four substitutes employed at 75 percent are estimated to cost the municipality just over SEK 1.3 million per year.

- I think this is important if we are to retain our staff, says social manager Eva-Lena Odeling about the work of creating a substitute pool also for home care and LSS.
