• Politics The Golden Key that Madrid wants to take from Putin: recognition for Russian support in 11-M

Vladimir Putin

no longer has the Golden Key of the Villa de Madrid that the City Council of the capital gave him during his official visit in 2006 when Alberto Ruiz Gallardón was mayor.

The favorable votes of Más Madrid, Ciudadanos, PSOE, Recupera Madrid and PP have made it possible to withdraw an honor that was "unacceptable" that the leader of "a criminal and autocratic regime" maintain.

This was stated by Rita Maestre, spokesperson for Más Madrid, in the presentation of a proposal from her political group, which in addition to withdrawing the distinction from the Russian leader included creating new reception places for six months, extendable to one year, for Ukrainian refugees, urging the central government to implement the pertinent sanctions for the invasion of Ukraine or

collaborate in the identification of real estate belonging to Russian oligarchs in the capital in order to block them.

A total of 15 measures, all of them approved by the Plenary with the majority of the political groups, which have requested a point vote, after reiterating their commitment to the refugees arriving in the city and condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

"Because this has now become a war, but it started as an invasion and that's what it should be called

," Maestre said.

From the PSOE, which has finally supported the proposal, they have been very critical of Más Madrid, whom they have accused of "seeking their political space" with this proposal.

"There are realities that surpass any other and using this to have political space is not the best way", remarked the socialist spokesperson, Mar Espinar, who has also affirmed that

"this is not the time" to create "divisions in the Plenary or in the administrations"

.

The only vote against the proposal to withdraw the golden keys from Putin, despite the initial doubts of the PP for legal reasons, has been that of Vox, which

has justified its refusal in that "the medal was not given to Putin, but to the Russian people."

The spokesman for the radical right formation, Javier Ortega Smith, took the opportunity, despite his intervention, to compare the Russian leader with the "Catalan, Basque, Galician and Valencian separatists" and to describe him as "a communist tyrant".

The municipal government parties, PP and Ciudadanos, did vote in favor of the measure.

Already last Thursday, the municipal spokeswoman, Inmaculada Sanz, assured that the proposal was "reasonable" and that it would have to be studied with the legal services.

An argument that the

popular

have maintained at the very moment of the vote, where they have finally been in favor of withdrawal.

From Ciudadanos, the deputy mayor, Begoña Villacís, also took advantage of the plenary vote to attack Vox for its refusal to withdraw the Golden Key from Putin.

"It is not obvious that the brave right wing becomes so cowardly when Putin is denounced,"

said the spokeswoman for the orange formation, who has recalled the links of the party led by Santiago Abascal with Marine Le Pen, Viktor Orban or Matteo Salvini, all they are ideologically close to the Russian president.

Gallardón's recognition of the current Russian president was made in 2006,

two years after the 11-M attacks, for the support that the Russian people

showed in those days.

"Madrid does not forget the solidarity of the Russian people with the victims of the terror that broke into the life of our city one morning in March," Gallardón said, according to Europa Press.

This recognition, centered on the figure of Putin, was due especially to the support that the country's leaders gave Spain during 11-M by going to the embassy of our country in Russia to show their solidarity and offer whatever help was necessary.

In that Gallardón ceremony he also

wanted to remember "with pride" the family ties that unite Russia with Spain

, giving as an example the musician Mijail Glinka, author

of Midsummer Night in Madrid

or the writers Alexander Pushkin and Miguel de Cervantes, both with their respective statues in parks in Madrid and Moscow.
