A control in Seine-Saint-Denis took a tragic turn.
A 30-year-old who was driving a stolen van died on Saturday after being shot by a policeman who was trying to arrest him in Aulnay-sous-Bois in circumstances that remain to be determined, we learned from the prosecution. from Bobigny.
Transported to hospital in critical condition at midday, the man born in 1988 died of his injuries.
The facts took place at the junction of two neighboring towns in the department, Aulnay-sous-Bois and Sevran.
The policeman in shock
Warned around 12:30 p.m. of the theft of a van, a crew from the anti-crime brigade (BAC) quickly spotted the vehicle and tried to check it at a red light.
For reasons that remain unclear at this stage, one of the officials used his service weapon once, “a bullet that hit the driver” of the stolen vehicle, detailed the prosecution.
The motorist nevertheless continued his journey for "a few hundred meters", before ending his race by hitting parked cars, in an alley in the Beaudottes district, in Sevran.
The General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN) was seized of the investigation.
The policeman, hospitalized in shock, could not be heard on Saturday.
The hearings of his colleagues were in progress.
The mayor of Sevran calls for calm
Tensions arose in Sevran following the tragedy.
Security forces have been sent as reinforcements and will remain mobilized for the night, according to a police source.
"The Prefect assured me that everything will be done to determine the exact circumstances of this tragedy" which affected a Sevranais "father of a family" and plunged the inhabitants of his district "in shock", declared Stéphane Blanchet, the mayor of Sevran.
"In the meantime and for everyone's safety, it is essential that we remain calm," he further urged.
