Scheffler, who lost on the last step to Billy Horschel in 2021, beat his compatriot Dustin Johnson (11th) 3&1 in the morning.

He can delight the Spaniard Jon Rahm the place of world N.1, if he wins against Kisner, who dismissed him (2 up) the Canadian Corey Conners (36th).

The 25-year-old Scheffler already has two victories this year, the Phoenix Open and the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

He distanced Johnson by five strokes after 11 holes, then saw his opponent, ex-world No.1, win the next four.

But the latter found the bunker at N.16 and could only par when Scheffler birdied.

And at 17 Johnson, who needed a birdie to extend the match, saw his ball turn on the edge of the hole before coming out.

For his part, Kisner, who was also a finalist in 2018 (beaten by Bubba Watson) before being titled the following year at the expense of Matt Kuchar, also battled to beat Conners.

The Canadian only cracked at N.17, his bogey then leaving his opponent to conclude on the last hole.
