• Terrorism ETA victims call a demonstration against Marlaska's policy

  • Terrorism The European Parliament commission considers ETA's terrorist crimes "as crimes against humanity"

"At the request of citizenship, we are going to take it away."

The president of the Association of Victims of Terrorism (AVT),

Maite Araluce

, has concluded her speech this Saturday in Madrid confirming that this group is going to withdraw the medal of the victims that in 2017 was awarded to the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska.

The withdrawal had been chanted by the thousands of people gathered in the Plaza de Colón in Madrid under the slogan

Treacherous Government

and asking for justice for the victims of terrorism.

The trigger for the demonstration, explained Araluce, were the

Government

's pacts with Bildu and the rapprochement and release of ETA members promoted by the Ministry of the Interior.

"It's been a long time since we've been out on the streets, but the government's betrayals have brought us back to Plaza de Colón to say enough is enough, enough of whitewashing those who are nothing but the heirs of the political arm of ETA", said Araluce in reference to the Government's pacts with Bildu.

Among those who listened to the words of the AVT and the shouts of the public that chanted them were representatives of the PP, Vox and Ciudadanos.

In the first row, the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, and the head of Justice of the PP and Madrid councilor

Enrique López

.

Along with them, the spokesperson for Vox,

Macarena Olona

, and the spokesperson for Cs,

Edmundo Bal

.

"Traitor Government"

"To some, the word treason in our motto will seem very strong, but there is no more than pulling from a newspaper library to describe this Government as a traitor", explained Araluce between applause and shouts of "Traitor Government".

"They said that they would never agree with Bildu, remember? Well, not only have they agreed, but they are preferred partners of the Government. They said that they would not bring blood prisoners with high sentences closer and it has brought them all closer," he added.

The words of the president of the AVT sometimes caused shouts from the public, which did not fail when Grande-Marlaska was mentioned.

The minister has ended up starring at the end of the act, with the withdrawal of the medal, apparently improvised before the clamor of the demonstrators.

"All this has been carried out with the complacency of the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, who has gone from being the implacable judge against terrorism who earned him the Cross, the AVT Medal of Dignity in 2017, to the minister who has yielded to ETA and has repealed the dispersion policy and favored the ETA members with false letters of repentance. Obviously, today he would not be worthy of this medal, which, if I am honest, makes us want to take it away from him, " Araluce has stated.

At that moment the cries of "take it off, take it off" have begun, which, after intensifying and becoming general, have led the president of the AVT to confirm that the medal would be withdrawn, a highly applauded decision.

With those words the president of the AVT closed the speech.

And, with cries of "enough already", of "long live Spain" and the national anthem, she has concluded the act.
