– Hundreds of lawyers attended the funeral of their captain, Ragaei Attia, from the headquarters of the General Bar of Lawyers’ Syndicate in central Cairo, who passed away this morning, Saturday, after he fell ill inside a courthouse during the trial session of lawyers accused of gathering and demonstrating.

According to lawyers and eyewitnesses, Rajaei Attia died after falling unconscious, and he was taken by ambulance to the hospital to try to rescue him, but he breathed his last at the age of 84.

Social media users circulated pictures of Attia during his colleagues' attempts to resuscitate him from his fall, before he was taken to the hospital, and circulated his last publication that he wrote, including religious supplications and monologues on his personal Facebook page, less than an hour before his death, under the title "Association with loved ones."

The late captain mourned many lawyers, public figures and pioneers of social networking sites.

Lawyers opposing Attia expressed their sadness and support for the late Sheikh of Lawyers, stressing his position in defending lawyers, which was confirmed by his dramatic death while defending lawyers in the courtroom.

Al-Azhar Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayeb said that he reminds the late of his appreciation for Al-Azhar and its scholars, his efforts in defending the oppressed and the needy, and his sober writings and research on Islamic knowledge and human thought.

Attia's death came months after his daughter's death, which affected him to the point of collapsing during her funeral, and his inability to stand on his feet.

Rajaei Attia grabbed the position of head of the Bar in elections that took place about two years ago, by confronting the former president, Sameh Ashour, after a heated electoral battle, during which an attempt was made to overthrow Attia, claiming that he was supported by the union’s Islamist lawyers.

Attia's victory in the recent Bar Association elections came after two electoral cycles, during which he faced Sameh Ashour, the former head of the Bar.

Ragai Attia Abdo was born on August 6, 1938 in the birthplace of a number of senior politicians and public figures in Egypt - led by the late President Hosni Mubarak - and it is the city of Shebin El-Kom, the capital of the Menoufia Governorate in northern Egypt.

The late obtained a Bachelor of Laws from Cairo University in 1959, and worked as a lawyer since his graduation, and pleaded in a number of the most important and most serious cases, including the case of the Takfir and Immigration Group in 1977, the case of the former Minister of Agriculture and later prominent opposition engineer Ibrahim Shukri, and the opposition newspaper Al Shaab with the Minister of Interior in 1979 And the issue of the assassination of President Sadat in 1981, then his name became associated with important issues, especially political ones, since then.

The late was appointed as a member of the Shura Council, and he also obtained membership in the Islamic Research Academy, the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, the Writers' Union, the Specialized National Councils and the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs.

The late has 120 books, mostly on Islamic and social issues. He also had interests in the press and chaired the board of directors of the economic newspaper Al Mal.
