• A month after the invasion of Ukraine, the Russian army is stalling and has failed to achieve its initial objectives, without a clear outcome emerging on the 30th day of war.

  • Russia claimed to have destroyed the Ukrainian army's largest fuel reserve near kyiv on Thursday evening with cruise missiles.

  • The United States and the European Union announced on Friday the creation of a working group aimed at reducing Europe's dependence on Russian fossil fuels.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine began a month ago.

On the 30th day of the war, Russian soldiers seem to be at a standstill.

The Russian army has not made any major advances on the ground for several days, heavy bombardments continue on several cities in Ukraine, kyiv has launched counter-offensives and Ukrainians under Russian occupation continue to demonstrate against their presence.

On the European side, the EU is getting organized to reduce its dependence on Russian oil.

The Advance of Vladimir Putin's Troops

On this map, we can see the advance of Vladimir Putin's soldiers on the 30th day of the war.

The Russian army has hardly advanced for several days in Ukraine.

“War freezes in stalemate in most theaters.

But the war is not over and is not likely to end quickly,” writes the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW), which refuses to rule out the slightest prognosis.

Near kyiv, the Russian army hit a Ukrainian army fuel reserve with cruise missiles.

The Kremlin also continues to bombard major Ukrainian cities.

Kyiv strikes back

While Ukrainian intelligence claims the Kremlin had ambitions to control kyiv on the second or third day of the invasion, the capital is still holding out.

For the past few days, Ukrainian forces have even claimed to be carrying out counter-offensives that can be seen in yellow on the map.

Claims that the British Ministry of Defense confirms.

"Ukrainian counterattacks and the retreat of Russian forces to overstretched resupply lines allowed Ukraine to reoccupy towns and defensive positions up to 35 kilometers east of kyiv," London said.

Demonstrations of resistance

In the territories controlled by the Russian forces, numerous demonstrations followed one another.

The NGO Acled managed to identify 84 of them between the start of the invasion and March 18.

Many videos are circulating on social networks showing Ukrainians protesting against the Russian occupation.

On Monday, in Kherson, a city in southern Ukraine occupied by Russian forces, the Russian army fired on demonstrators protesting against their presence.

At least one person was injured.

The European Union and its dependence on Russian gas

The United States and the European Union announced Friday in Brussels measures to reduce European dependence on Russian gas.

Until now, the EU imports almost half of its gas from Russia as can be seen on this graph: 48.4% exactly.

In this context, the United States will endeavor to supply Europe with an additional 15 billion cubic meters of liquefied natural gas (LNG) this year.

At the same time, Germany, which before the Russian invasion imported a third of its oil and some 45% of its coal from Russia, announced that it would do without Russian coal by the fall and would greatly reduce strongly its dependence on Russian oil by the end of the year.

For gas, Berlin could be “largely independent (…) by mid-2024”, indicated the German Ministry of the Economy in a press release.
