Economy The fleet decides to return to fishing and call off the general strike due to the rise in the price of diesel
"That he help us, that the King is the only good thing that we have left in Spain".
More than a hundred fishermen were waiting for Don Felipe this Friday, early in the afternoon, in the vicinity of
Puerto Bonanza
, in
Sanlúcar de Barrameda
.
Felipe VI traveled there on a visit that the people of Sanlúcar had been waiting for two years and that made more sense now, since Don Felipe included a meeting with the primary sector on his agenda – with four different commitments.
But several hours before that meeting, two street sweepers spread the water from the muddy puddles with their brushes, which at 11 in the morning remembered that it had rained the night before.
Everything had to be perfect in half an hour, when the King planned to reach the Plaza del Cabildo, where half a thousand people were waiting for the King.
Between cheers, Don Felipe was used to greet as many people as possible.
He was accompanied by the Minister of Agriculture, Luis Planas;
the Chairman of the Board, Juanma Moreno;
and the mayor of the city,
Víctor Mora
, who presented Felipe VI with the baton and the keys to Sanlúcar.
Don Felipe entered the old town hall, from whose balcony he saluted.
An hour later, the crowd gathered in the vicinity of the
Barbadillo winery
, which is celebrating its bicentennial.
Don Felipe toured them, signed one of their Oloroso wine barrels and enjoyed lunch with the local authorities, members of the Bodegas board of directors and five generations of the Barbadillo family, in whose hands the company remains.
Sanlúcar is the Spanish gastronomic capital this 2022 and they organized a lunch in which the Barbadillos gave the King a Versus 1891 bottle. Don Felipe coincided with his aunt,
Beatriz de Orleans Borbón
, at the meal .
After lunch, Felipe VI went to the aforementioned port of Bonanza, the most complicated point of his visit, since the tension that the fishing sector has with the decisions taken by the Government made it unpredictable to know its reaction to the Monarch.
"They are saying that the strike is called off and it is not true. We have not gone out to work because nothing is specified here on paper," they explained to EL MUNDO.
Later, they insisted: "It's the only good thing we have left in Spain."
In Sanlúcar there are 120 boats moored without going out to fish because of the price of diesel.
That is why Don Felipe met with the patron saint of the fishermen's brotherhood,
Antonio Romero
.
Afterwards, he went over to shake hands with some of the fishermen.
Between applause and cheers, Don Felipe assured them that he was aware of his problems: "The skipper has explained them to me very well," he commented when the other sailors conveyed his needs to him.
Next, Felipe VI visited the replica of the Nao Victoria, which this year celebrates the 500th anniversary of the 1st voyage around the world.
It was a day in which cheers for the King were mixed with requests for the resignation of Minister Planas, who did not approach the fishermen or offer statements to the press.
