It would be a first.

Confronted like a northwestern part of France with a high concentration of fine particles in the air, Brittany imposes a general lowering of the speed.

On the expressways, the speed is lowered by 20 km / h from this Friday evening throughout the region in order to limit the emissions of PM10 and P2.5 particles which lodge in the lungs of the population.

Considered "poor" by the Airbreizh association, the air quality should not improve this weekend, in particular due to favorable weather conditions (lack of wind in particular).

A situation which prompted the prefecture of Ille-et-Vilaine to consider the implementation of traffic restrictions from Sunday in Rennes.

"If this episode of pollution were to continue, the differentiated traffic (Crit'Air device) will be activated in the Rennes intrarocade from Sunday March 27", explains the prefecture.

Since its implementation in October 2018 in Rennes, differentiated traffic has never been implemented in Rennes.

It is triggered when the concentrations of fine particles remain above the critical threshold of 50 μg/m³ for three consecutive days.

Threshold 2 prohibits intra-ring road access to all vehicles of class 4 and 5. The highest threshold also includes vehicles classified as sticker 3.

“There are multiple sources of particulate pollution episodes: road traffic, industry, residential heating (due to cool nights and mornings) and agriculture (ammonia emissions),” explains Airbreizh.

The association also specifies that "flows from the North-East, bring masses of air of continental origin loaded with particles contribute to this episode".

Beyond the speed limit, the prefecture has introduced several bans and recommendations to limit particulate emissions.

In particular, you should avoid using your fireplace or stove, mowing or trimming your hedges with thermal devices, or even controlling the temperature in your accommodation.
