Luleå municipality owns about 6,500 hectares of forest.

According to the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, nine percent of forest holdings are protected from felling.

- It is over ninety percent that you are prepared to cut down, we think it is completely unnecessary.

There are so many other methods today, says Lotta Lindgren at the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation in Luleå.

Citizen proposal submitted

Among other things, the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation believes that clear-cutting is a threat to the ecosystems in the municipality.

They have now submitted a citizen proposal that the municipality should produce a forestry plan based on clear-cut forestry.

Thirteen other associations, Sami villages and organizations support the proposal.

Important for attractiveness

Hansi Gelter is an entrepreneur in ecotourism and sits on the board of the Nature Tourism Companies in Sweden.

He believes that clear-cutting forestry is important for Luleå and Boden with the new large industrial establishments.

- It is important to get labor here, part of the attraction is nature.

If we have many hiking trails, bike paths, good nice forest to experience, it will be attractive to come here.

If we have clear-cutting and wind turbines, it will be fly in fly out, says Hansi Gelter.
