As the only North Korean diplomatic mission in the United States, North Korea's UN mission is a window for dialogue between the United States and North Korea.

SBS reporters met with Ambassador Kim Seong in person to inquire about the position of the UN Security Council emergency meeting convened to respond to North Korea's ICBM launch.

[Kim Seong / North Korean ambassador to the United Nations: No, we do not care because we exercised our rights in self-defence and legally even at a UN Security Council meeting.]

He emphasized that there is no justification for the Security Council sanctions.

[Kim Seong / North Korean Ambassador to the United Nations: We have never acknowledged sanctions.

That is why we do not care if the UN Security Council imposes additional sanctions.]

At this emergency meeting, the Security Council is expected to discuss further reducing the supply of crude oil and refined petroleum products to North Korea, which is still limited.

In the Security Council resolution adopted in December 2017, there is a so-called oil trigger clause, 'If North Korea fires another ICBM, it will automatically reduce oil supply'.

However, unanimous approval of the members of the Security Council is required for this provision to be applied.

The key is China and Russia.

So far, neither China nor Russia has opposed UN sanctions if North Korea carries out such a high-level provocation.

However, as the international situation has fluctuated due to Russia's recent invasion of Ukraine, it is predicted that both countries will exercise their veto power in this Security Council sanctions.

North Korea's UN ambassador to the United Nations, Kim Seong, responded that the sanctions were passed without any hesitation.

[Kim Seong / North Korean ambassador to the United Nations: Since we have self-sufficient national economic distance, we are immune to any sanctions.

We are all right.] This

is an indication that we will not stop firing missiles under any sanctions.

Separately from the United Nations, the US State Department announced sanctions against one North Korean and two Russian institutions, including the Second Academy of Natural Sciences, which is leading the development of North Korean missiles.
