• UAB The students of a gender master cancel a feminist professor

  • Politics The party of 'unsubmissive' feminists is born against "the dangerous trans delirium"

"All with Juana!"

It was the song that was heard last Tuesday afternoon in one of the corridors of the Doctoral School of the

Autonomous University of Barcelona

(UAB).

About thirty women accompanied the teacher

Juana Gallego

while she denounced through the Confluence Feminist Movement channel on YouTube that the center had prevented her from teaching a class.

Far from being a

déjà vu

, the controversy started on the same day and at the same time the previous week, when none of the students of the

Gender and Communication

master's degree showed up for the first of the three classes that the teacher had to teach, with advertising as a thematic axis.

Gallego denounced that this collective plan was the result of "ideological persecution" due to her articles in the media and on her blog, in which she defends a

feminism

that is far removed from concepts such as

transgender ideology

.

The master's coordination team denied any "censorship" or "boycott" and limited itself to lamenting that the session had not aroused "the expected interest".

The official statement referred to the "positions far from the majority line of postgraduate studies" held by the professor.

No less controversial was the suspension of the second class the day before yesterday, which had to address the representation of the female body in art and advertising.

The transfer of location decided by the university from the

Barcelona

building where the master's degree is taught to the Bellaterra campus -to counteract the mobilization of feminist groups to attend the session-, was followed by the postponement, without a specific date, motivated by the announcement that it was going to be broadcast on YouTube.

Gallego argues that the notification of the postponement reached him with little notice, so he was not aware of it until he arrived at the Doctoral School and saw that the classroom was closed.

The postgraduate coordination accuses her of politically instrumentalizing the conflict, since

Feministas al Congreso

, a recently created party of which she is the first deputy secretary general, publicized the broadcast that was going to take place in the afternoon on social networks.

Although the session could not be held, more than 600 people connected to the Confluence Feminist Movement channel on YouTube at the scheduled time, which for the teacher shows that "there is indeed interest in this matter."

For this reason, Gallego, who assures that with his complaint he only intends to "open a social debate on the limits to freedom of expression", confirms that the only thing that has existed is "a problem of ideological censorship", which he also does participants to those responsible for the master's degree and the

rector

of the UAB: "The normal thing would be that they would have taken my part, but they take responsibility for that censorship by justifying the students".

The

Universitaris per la Convivència

collective has shown solidarity with Gallego.

"If we continue like this, we will end up in the trenches. This is not about

trans law

or feminism, but about academic freedoms," laments one of his spokespersons,

Isabel Fernández

.

The UAB professor also says she does not understand why the university has not condemned "the unjustifiable cancellation that the students have exercised due to the ideas of a professor who has been researching the subject for decades."

UAB arguments

"The class had to be postponed due to the announcement of the attendance of non-registered people and the live broadcast through YouTube by a platform or political entity and to guarantee the rights of the students to their image and safety," justify sources of the

UAB

.

"A teaching space, with a scheduled class, cannot be instrumentalized by any political party, platform or entity outside the university," they point out.

Gender and Communication is a face-to-

face

master's degree , but, in any case, the academic regulations establish that "the platform used to offer non-face-to-face teaching is the one provided by the UAB, except in duly justified cases, which must be specified in an agreement with the institution or company responsible for the platform".

Gallego reproaches the university's governing team for approaching "absolutely intolerant positions" and for being "incapable of defending professors who disagree with totalitarian and unscientific theories."

The UAB says that the mediation mechanisms provided for in the

University Coexistence Law

have been activated to resolve the problem.

"There is nothing to mediate because I have not created the conflict. Nothing has happened in the classroom, but there has been a previous boycott for my ideas," replies the teacher.

She some ideas that she warns will not change: "I am not willing to teach that the Earth is flat."
