Escalation North Korea launches a new projectile into the Sea of Japan
North Korean media confirmed Friday that the regime launched its new
Hwasong-17 intercontinental missile (ICBM)
the day before and that the projectile reached flight heights not previously achieved by its army.
The missile, "launched from Pyongyang International Airport, climbed to a maximum height of 6,248.5 km, flew 1,090 km in 4,052 seconds, and landed precisely at the planned location in the high seas of
the East Korean Sea
( name given to the Sea of Japan in the two Koreas)," the KCNA news agency reported.
The test, which was attended by leader
Kim Jong-un
, according to KCNA, was the first of an ICBM since 2017 and contributes to the increase in tension in the region since it means for North Korea to break the moratorium that it self-imposed in 2018 to try to achieve a climate of diplomatic understanding with the US.
