The long-awaited remodeling

of Puerta del Sol

has already begun.

The two areas in the center of the square on both sides of the statue of Carlos III in Puerta del Sol have already been fenced off to leave a central passageway so that pedestrians do not have to go all the way around.

The reform of the emblematic Madrid square

will last twelve months and will involve its complete pedestrianization

and all the streets that converge on it.

The objective of the José Luis Martínez-Almeida City Council is to make the space more orderly and diaphanous in such a way that the structures that are now scattered at kilometer zero will be reorganized.

With this remodeling

, the dome of the suburban railway

, the famous subway whale, will disappear.

In its place, the Consistory will install a new structure that will be totally transparent because the current one prevents a full view of the space and its removal makes it possible to free up space in the square.

The new dome will have an oval shape that will allow the square to be seen from all its points

as no angles are formed

and it will be integrated with the curved shapes of the facades of the Sol buildings.

In addition, it will be completely transparent

as it is entirely made of glass

except for a central steel beam that will be supported by three supports of the same material.

After the reform there will be an area with eight benches at one end of the square, where Montera, Preciados and Carmen streets meet;

On one side of the roundabout there will be the sculpture of the Bear and the Strawberry Tree and on the other that of Mariblanca and kilometer zero will be highlighted.

In addition,

the existing sources will disappear

and a sheet of water will be created, according to Efe.

The reform was delayed over time because every minimal change in the central enclave must go through the

General Directorate of Heritage of the Community of Madrid

, as Puerta del Sol is a Site of Cultural Interest.

Any movement of elements in the square entails a large number of interlocutors to make decisions, which has caused several delays.

traffic cuts

In addition, work has also begun

on the Pedro Bosch bridge

, another of the few

escaléxtric

that are already remaining in the city and that will mean traffic cuts.

The first phase of the works will consist

of removing the section of the overpass

that currently crosses the Ciudad de Barcelona avenue and extends beyond Andalucía street.

A ramp will also be built for the pedestrian and bicycle crossing towards Méndez Álvaro street in Arganzuela.

The second phase of the work will involve

the complete remodeling

of the axis from the Ciudad de Barcelona avenue to the Conde de Casal roundabout.

As for the part of the structure that crosses the railways and that connects the Retiro district with that of Arganzuela, it will be maintained, although it will also be reformed,

reducing the traffic lanes

, introducing cyclist mobility and creating a pedestrian promenade between the green areas of both districts on one side and the other of the railways.

From now until next May

, traffic will remain closed

on the section of the bridge that runs between Valderribas street and Ciudad de Barcelona avenue, although one lane will remain enabled in each direction on the outer sides of the bridge.

Therefore, drivers will have to

take alternative detours

, although the City Council recommends avoiding driving around the areas closed to traffic and the use of public transport.
