• EU The hard core stops Sánchez's plan: "It begins to resemble Don Quixote" and the Belgian Prime Minister, "Sancho Panza"

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has launched a plan B in the face of resistance from Germany and other countries to his proposal to intervene in prices at the

European Council

this week.

It consists, according to

Moncloa

sources , in which

Spain

and

Portugal

can intervene in gas prices only in their territory.

It is very unusual that in a European market some countries can skip the community regulation and others cannot, but in Moncloa they see it as feasible, because as the Iberian Peninsula is an energy island it would not harm the rest.

On the contrary, they defend that if they are not given permission, both Iberian countries would be doubly penalized because they suffer more than others due to their isolation due to lack of interconnections.

In any case, they emphasize that they would be immediate but temporary and exceptional measures with the sole objective of lowering prices quickly.

Sánchez, however, maintains his battle that this price intervention should be adopted throughout the

EU

, but Moncloa assumes that not all countries accept it.

As EL MUNDO published this Tuesday, the resistance of

Germany

,

the Netherlands

and other states is leading to failure in this approach by Sánchez on his European tour.

All of them believe it is counterproductive to take interventionist measures in a framework in which private investment must be attracted to promote renewable energies.

How would Spain intervene in prices if they allow it?

Moncloa ratifies what the Third Vice President of the Government, Teresa Ribera, advanced on Tuesday.

It consists of capping the price of gas offered to the market by combined cycle plants.

In this way, since it is this source of energy that makes electricity more expensive, the bill would go down.

And how to compensate gas companies for this price limitation?

Compensation would be paid to them either through the

State Budget

or with a surcharge on the consumer bill, although the latter would benefit, because the overall price would fall.

In other words, the price would drop a lot for them, although not completely, because they would have to contribute something to compensate the gas companies, according to the aforementioned government sources.

These do not give figures on how much they would run into.

In parallel, Sánchez also relaunches in his approach for the European Council to be able to intervene the so-called "benefits fallen from heaven" of the energy sector, despite the fact that he did not insist on it on Tuesday in his meeting with the leaders of the main electricity and oil companies in the country. .

However, in Moncloa they emphasize that

Spain

already took that step last September -although it practically withdrew it later- and they imply that they are not going to take additional steps in the

Council of Ministers

next Tuesday, which will adopt the measures after seeing the margin that it has remained depending on how the European summit has previously evolved.

The president justifies these measures, because one of the measures to be adopted in the European Council is going to make prices even more expensive, in Moncloa's opinion.

This is the increase in gas storage in

Europe

for next winter to reduce dependence on

Russia

.

This will mean that Spain and the rest of the countries will have to buy more gas not only to cover their consumption, but also to increase their reserves.
