• Foreign Affairs Sánchez supports for the first time that the Sahara be an autonomous province of Morocco

  • Historical twist What does the autonomy plan for Western Sahara consist of?

"I have the honor of addressing Your Majesty to convey some important ideas for the new relationship between the

Kingdoms of Morocco and Spain

", is how the letter that Pedro Sánchez sent this Friday to the King of Morocco begins, informing him of the change in position of the Government of Spain regarding Western Sahara.

The Country

has had access to the letter in its entirety.

Letter of which the

King of Morocco

published some paragraphs last Friday that until today have been all the information on the change of position of the Spanish Government.

The letter continues with the following paragraph: "Our countries are inextricably linked by common affections, history, geography, interests and friendship. I am convinced of the destinies of our two peoples as well, the prosperity of

Morocco

is linked to that of

Spain

and vice versa Our objective must be to build a new relationship, based on transparency and permanent communication, mutual respect and

respect for the agreements signed by both parties

and abstention from any unilateral action, in order to live up to the importance of everything we share to prevent future crises between our two countries.

According to what was published last Friday in the statement from the

Moroccan Royal House

, "Spain considers the Moroccan autonomy initiative as the most serious, realistic and credible basis for resolving the dispute."

And indeed that is the key paragraph of the letter, which today can be read in its entirety: "I recognize the importance of the issue of Western Sahara for Morocco," says Sánchez in the letter, "and the serious and credible efforts of Morocco, in the framework of the United Nations, to find a mutually acceptable solution. In this sense, Spain considers that the Moroccan proposal for autonomy presented in 2007 as

the most serious, credible and realistic basis for its resolution

".

And so, with the confirmation of the Spanish radical turn to the issue of

Western Sahara

,

Sánchez's letter to

the King of Morocco continues to assure that "in this new context, you have my guarantee that Spain will act with the absolute transparency that corresponds to a great friend and ally. I assure you that Spain will always keep its commitments and its word".

The Government of

Morocco welcomed

Sánchez

's message

, stating that his commitment to the autonomy plan for the Sahara within the kingdom -proposed for the first time in 2007- "allows for a clear and ambitious roadmap to be envisaged in a lasting way" the two-way relationship.

Rabat has also announced that the Spanish Foreign Minister,

José Manuel Albares, will visit the capital before the start of the month of Ramadan,

which is estimated to begin in early April.

In addition, he announced an upcoming trip for the Spanish president.

The

Polisario Front

responded, for its part, immediately to this change in the position of the Spanish Government, a former colonizing power: "Spain succumbs to the blackmail and the policy of fear used by Morocco. It is a position that does not correspond to political responsibility and legal authority in Spain and that will condition its role in resolving the conflict".

Thus,

Sánchez's letter

reaffirms the new position and expresses Sánchez's eagerness to hold a meeting with the King of

Morocco

: "I look forward to the opportunity to hold a meeting with Your Majesty as soon as possible to renew and deepen the relationship privileged relationship between our two sister countries, in a spirit of close coordination and reiterate our determination to face common challenges together,

especially the cooperation management of migratory flows in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic

, acting as always in a spirit of total cooperation and restoring full normality in the circulation of people and goods, for the benefit of our peoples.

All these actions will be carried out in order to guarantee the stability and territorial integrity of our two countries."

The terms of Sánchez's letter have meant a 180-degree turn with respect to the position traditionally maintained by Spain, which has always advocated a resolution of the conflict within the framework of the United Nations that considers the Sahara as

a "non-autonomous territory"

pending of decolonization and admits the right of its population to determine its future through a negotiated solution.

The dispute over

Western Sahara

erupted in 1975, when

Spain withdrew from what was then its 53rd province

, after committing with the United Nations to the decolonization of the territory.

Morocco and Mauritania filled the void left by Spain and a war was unleashed against the Polisario Front -which has since claimed the right of the Saharawis over these lands-.

Tens of thousands of Saharawis fled to the desert to escape the conflict and took refuge in the Tindouf camps, on Algerian soil.

Dependent on international aid, between 175,000 and 300,000 refugees remain there today, according to various sources.

At the same time, thousands of Saharawis remained in the occupied territory, where today they are a minority harassed by Moroccan repression.

Mauritania withdrew from the conflict in 1979 and Morocco occupied its space and continued the conflict until in 1991 it signed a ceasefire with the Polisario Front.

the deal,

call a self-determination referendum that to date has not been held

.

The letter ends with "I beg you to accept, Your Majesty, the expression of my most distinguished sentiments."
