The willingness to help war-torn Ukraine is great – also in Hesse.

If you want to help, you should first note that not every donation serves its purpose, even if it is well intentioned.

Clothing donations such as short skirts or light summer clothing do not make sense given the current temperatures.

According to Silvia Holten, spokeswoman for "World Vision", donations in kind and material also cause high costs for collection, sorting, transport and the often lengthy customs clearance in the destination country.

"In this way they do not help, but rather hinder the humanitarian work on site," says Gisela Prellwitz, spokeswoman for the regional association of the German Red Cross (DRK) in Wiesbaden.

The DRK therefore asks for monetary donations for the people in Ukraine (see section monetary donations).

They are "more flexible and efficient to use than a donation in kind." Nevertheless, aid organizations are occasionally looking for donations in kind and there is the possibility of providing refugees with accommodation (more on this below).
