The Ukrainian armed forces have reported the death of another Russian commander.

Colonel Alexei Sharov was "eliminated" between Mykolayiv and Mariupol, a representative of the Odessa regional military administration said on Wednesday via the Telegram messenger service.

The information cannot be verified.

Sharov most recently commanded the 810th Russian Marine Infantry Brigade, which is deployed on the southern Ukrainian front.

During the 2014 annexation of Crimea, it was used by the Russian government to seize strategic points on the Ukrainian peninsula and invade Sevastopol, where it was stationed before the raid began in February.

In the past month, the Russian armed forces were able to gain more ground in southern Ukraine than on other sectors of the front.

However, here too they met with fierce resistance.

In Mykolaiv, the Ukrainian armed forces have so far managed to repel all Russian attempts to break through in the direction of the city of Odessa.

The city of Mariupol on the Azov Sea has not been fully captured by Russian troops, despite massive artillery attacks.

The Russian side has already lost a number of high-ranking officers in recent weeks, including at least five generals.

Foreign Policy magazine says it is the highest death toll among Russian generals and general staff officers since World War II.

Russia's ruler Vladimir Putin has so far confirmed the death of a general.

The Russian command structure is highly hierarchical, and there are also problems in communicating with one another.

Both are considered by Western experts to be the reason why Russian generals act close to the front and therefore have a higher risk of being killed.
