Divorce contracts amounted to about 214,000 contracts in 2020

Today, Wednesday, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi touched on the issue of divorce in Egypt, considering that it is best for a child to grow up in a normal family.

According to what was reported by the "Al-Youm Al-Sabaa" website, the Egyptian president's speech came during the "Egyptian Women" celebration, which Sisi is keen to attend annually.

During the ceremony, the Egyptian president said: "The issue of divorce.. I want to say (I want to say) I wonder that we as families (we are families) do we have our children and children between the man and the six? .. He (the husband) stands on his position, and she (the wife) stands on her position. Regardless of the situation, right or wrong.

He continued, "But this is not a worthy (price) to be paid by this family (this family) for the benefit of the son and daughter... I imagine this is not a big and strong wish if I overstepped myself a little, a man or six, in order to provide my son and daughter with a stable environment, satisfied and satisfactory. Do you think this is a very big wish?

The Egyptian president pointed out that the government is working to provide care homes for children, but "our assessment, according to studies by sociologists and psychologists, is that it is better for a child to grow up in a family."

Al-Sisi addressed the Minister of Solidarity, saying that "whatever we do in care homes... (is this) better? Nor are these people present with families (...) and no matter what our capabilities are, we will not be able to provide care like families, and we are pleased with the conditions that existed in this matter, And we do not want (we do not want) anyone of us to remain in a broken mind and the circumstances have broken it.”

Al-Sisi had called years ago for the issuance of a law regulating verbal divorce cases, and questioned the possibility of documenting divorce contracts, such as marriage contracts, after the high rates of divorce in Egypt, a call that sparked a state of debate among Al-Azhar scholars about whether or not verbal divorce occurred.

After that, the Council of Senior Scholars at Al-Azhar Al-Sharif issued a statement ending the controversy over the matter, stating that “the occurrence of an oral divorce that fulfills its pillars and conditions, and that is issued by the husband on the basis of capacity and conscious will, and in the legal terms denoting divorce, is what Muslims have settled on since the time of the Prophet … without the requirement of testimony or documentation".

Al-Sisi came back to comment on this, asking: Did I dry my brain with the religious establishment... No... I will decide (letting) the issue interact with society and the religious establishment, respecting the logic of time."

The Egyptian president, who has been in power since 2014, had previously touched upon several aspects of the ideal life for Egyptians as he sees it, including the keenness to avoid obesity, excessive childbearing, and not listening to rumours.

It is noteworthy that the number of divorce contracts in Egypt (about 103 million people) amounted to about 214,000 contracts in 2020, according to official figures issued by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics.
