New record in sight on the art market in New York.

Christie's will sell a portrait of Marilyn Monroe by Andy Warhol in May, estimated at $200 million.

It could be the most expensive 20th century work ever sold at auction.

During a press conference, Christie's presented the painting "Shot Sage Blue Marilyn", painted in 1964 by Andy Warhol.

The famous image of the American actress belongs to the Zurich-based Thomas and Doris Ammann Foundation, which will use the proceeds of its sale "to improve the lives of children around the world" with health and education programs .

An “intact visual power”

“With 100% of the sale of a single painting going to charity, this is the highest auction for a philanthropic purpose since the collection of Peggy and David Rockefeller in 2018,” boasted Christie's.

For Georg Frei, president of the Ammann Foundation, this image “testifies to its intact visual power in this new millennium”.

"Marilyn, the woman, is no more, the terrible circumstances of her life and her death are forgotten," he said.

“All that remains is that enigmatic smile that brings her closer to another mysterious smile of a distinguished woman, the Mona Lisa.

If it sells well for around $200 million, the painting will break all records for a 20th century art auction.

A booming market

The absolute record, all periods combined, is currently held by Leonardo da Vinci's "Salvator Mundi", auctioned in 2017 for $450.3 million by Christie's.

For 20th century works.

“The Women of Algiers” by Pablo Picasso (179.4 million dollars in 2015) and the “Nu reclining” by Modigliani (170.4 million in 2015) were also sold at Christie's.

Another copy by the Italian painter fetched $157.2 million in 2018 at Sotheby's.

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the New York art market has never been better.

In the fall of 2021, Sotheby's put the Macklowe collection, resulting from the divorce of real estate magnate Harry Macklowe, on the market for some 600 million dollars.

Almost unknown a year ago, NFTs also represent the new goose that lays the golden egg on the contemporary art market.
